Accoya Decking

Accoya Wood

ETT Fine Woods is proud to be a manufacturing partner of Accoya wood.

Accoya wood is made by Accsys at its plant in
Arnhem, in the Netherlands. Accsys transforms
fast-growing, certified sustainable wood into
Accoya wood through its proprietary acetylation
process.

The result is high performing wood with
sustainability credentials that exceed those of
man-made, resource depleting, carbon-polluting alternatives.

About Accoya Wood

Accoya wood is highly resistant to shrinkage, checking, splintering, insect infestation, decay, and rot.

Accoya is low maintenance, withstanding extreme weather conditions even when used in boat docks and heavy-duty flooring.

Accoya wood combines high performance and long life durability in varied conditions, with sustainability credentials including Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold certification.

Accoya wood is highly resistant to shrinkage, checking, splintering, insect infestation, decay, and rot.

How is Accoya Made?

Acetylation wood technology permanently modifies the wood to prevent it from being able to absorb water rather than treating wood with a toxic chemical to try to stop rot or insect attacks. The result is real wood that doesn’t rot.

accoya acetylation

According to Accsys:

Treating or modifying wood by subjecting a softwood to a vinegar, which turns it into a hardwood by preventing the cells in the wood from being able to absorb water.

So acetylated wood is… Pickled wood?

More or less. Yes.

Ok the chemistry behind ‘turns it into’ is a little complex, and the vinegar is acetic anhydride. Not quite the malt vinegar for your fish and chips. But the principle is there.

Accoya is graded and sold based on their proprietary specifications and performance characteristics rather than visual or structural grading systems.

“Clear grade” has a uniform grain and is virtually clear.

Does Accoya carry a warranty of any kind?

Yes. Accoya has a warrantiy provided by Accsys, the manufacturer of Accoya wood. This warranty is 50 years in above ground applications and 25 years in ground or fresh water conditions. Accoya’s warranty gives you the peace of mind your project will last for decades.

Yes, although we recommend that a professional inspect the integrity of the existing framing to ensure it is stable, usable and passes your current city code requirements. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Can Accoya be painted?

Accoya decking can be painted, but it’s generally not recommended for horizontal surfaces like decking.

What spans can I expect from Accoya Decking?

Due to the strength of Accoya, you can expect the following spans:

1x (net 3/4″) – up to 16″ on center

Diagonal patterns may require shorter joist spacing

We recommend that you check with your local building code before deciding on joist spans.

About Accoya Grey Decking

What is Accoya Grey?

Colored through completely from surface to core, it delivers a consistent and sophisticated look.

Accoya Grey wood starts as a grey tone and continues to naturally weather, taking on a light silver/gray patina. This means there is no need to apply stains or sealers annually for minimal maintenance.

How is the color maintained for Accoya Grey?

No additional treatment is needed. Accoya Grey starts with a natural grey tone. When exposed to UV and moisture, it will further transition to a soft silver-grey patina.
