What is Tigerwood Decking?

Tigerwood Decking, also known as Goncalo Alves, is a dense tight-grained wood that is highly resistant to moisture absorption. Tigerwood decking is orange brown in color with occasional narrow to wide irregular stripes of dark brown or black, giving the decking pieces a striped look similar to a tiger’s stripes.

This wood is sourced from Mexico south to Brazil, Tigerwood has excellent weathering properties and is rated as very durable for decay resistance. Tigerwood decking is highly resistant to moisture absorption, resistant to shrinkage, checking, splintering, and insect infestation.

Tigerwood creates a unique exotic look for a deck, offering a different look from other tropical decking woods. Tigerwood will silver over time or the color can be maintained by treating the decking. If you would like to keep that honey brown color, finish with a UV inhibitor such as Messmer’s UV Plus.

Tigerwood is a dense and naturally durable tropical hardwood. It is an attractive and unique alternative to more expensive hardwoods such as Teak or Ipe. Tigerwood is resistant to rot and decay, making it an excellent choice for exterior applications such as decking. It will far outlast other popular wood decking species such as treated Pine, Cedar, Redwood, and Douglas Fir.
