How to Clean Teak Decks?

We have been talking to many of our customers and industry leaders about what their recommendations are for cleaning Teak Decking and Teak wood. After many different suggestions and ideas, we think we have found the best solution. We recommend Cape Ann Teak Cleaner.

Cape Ann Teak Cleaner is one of the least damaging teak cleaners you can use. It’s a one step cleaner that takes all the work out of removing old teak oils and oxidation.

Simply pour cleaner onto a wet sponge and wipe onto the teak, for large areas such as a deck. Wet the surface first and pour a little cleaner onto the surface. Use a scratch pad to spread the cleaner out. Wait about 10 minutes and with the scratch pad and a hose rinse and scrub lightly.

Unfortunately, teak can easily be damaged by using two part cleaners and a scrub brush as the acids and caustic components of these cleaners eat away at the soft growth ring layers of the teak.

It is possible to get rid of these ridges by sanding and only using one step cleaners with a scratch pad. After this, while the teak is still damp, a coating of Cape Ann Teak Fix can be applied or allow the surface to dry and apply your favorite teak oil.

Cleaners that are too caustic can and will ruin your decking and at a certain point if a good cleaner won’t work you may want to look at sanding or replacement depending on the current thickness of the decking.
